Question of the Month:

Why am I seeing low flying helicopters in the area?

Utility Inspections

Residents and visitors in Kent County may notice low-flying helicopters between June 12–17 as part of routine electric transmission line inspections.

The inspections are being conducted by ITC to assess high-voltage transmission lines, structures, and equipment. Helicopters may fly at lower altitudes than usual to allow crews to safely inspect transmission infrastructure and identify potential maintenance needs, including damaged equipment and vegetation hazards.

These flights are part of regular system maintenance and reliability requirements. There is no cause for alarm if you see a low-flying helicopter near transmission lines during this period.

Inspections are weather-dependent and may occur throughout Kent County and neighboring counties.

EGLE & USGS Airborne Geophysical Survey

Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) surveys are scheduled to occur across Southwest Michigan during 2026–2027. These surveys use low-flying aircraft equipped with specialized sensors to map underground water resources and geological conditions. The data collected supports groundwater planning, environmental protection, and infrastructure decision-making.

What You May See / Hear:

  • Low-flying aircraft operating in grid patterns over communities

  • Multiple passes over the same area during daylight hours

  • Activity occurring intermittently over several months

This activity is expected and part of a coordinated, state-supported effort.

Public Safety & Operational Notes:

  • This is a non-invasive operation with no ground disruption

  • Aircraft are operating under FAA regulations

  • Dispatch centers may receive calls regarding low-flying aircraft; no response is typically required unless additional factors are present

  • No expected impacts to communications or critical infrastructure

Human and Animal Safety:

  • Electromagnetic levels used are well within established safety standards

  • There are no known health risks to people

  • No impacts to livestock or wildlife beyond possible temporary reactions to aircraft noise

Suggested Messaging if Contacted:

  • This is a planned, state-supported survey to improve groundwater and environmental planning

  • There is no risk to public health or animals

  • The activity is temporary and will move through the area over time
